About the show

Caligula—the name of a real historical figure, a Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty—has for centuries, ever since the historian Suetonius wrote *The Twelve Caesars* (c. 120 AD), been synonymous with boundless cruelty, the impunity of tyranny, and absurd debauchery.

At the same time, his tragic fate holds a unique fascination, drawing us in with its mysterious paradoxes and obsessive nature. What lies behind his contempt—and at times, open hatred—for everyone, from which such bestial cruelty springs?

In Albert Camus’s interpretation, Caligula is a solitary egocentric who, after losing the illicit love he felt for his sister, attempts to escape the madness and the agonizing void left by the loss of that kindred spirit. Desperate to break free from the past, Caligula wields his absolute imperial power to prove his strength and his unyielding resolve in the face of fate. He takes action in search of meaning and happiness, yet his deeds bring only chaos and death.

Are there answers to the questions that torment the play’s protagonist—and each of us: of what acts of baseness is a person capable when fearing for their life? What—or whom—are they willing to trample upon? What humiliations or tortures are they prepared to endure? What is true freedom?

At what price is personal freedom attained? What turns a person into a slave—a being who loses dignity and honor? What is a person with absolute power capable of? Is it the tyrant himself—or is it the fear and silent acquiescence of those around him—that breeds tyranny and brings about not only the death of an individual but the destruction of an entire civilization?
